How is Window Film Installed?

Window film is being seen more and more as a relatively quick and easy way to upgrade the living conditions in any home. Whether the concern is privacy, heat control, or security, the correct selection of window film can offer solutions to almost every unique scenario.

When we talk to home owners about using window film to improve their homes, we are usually asked about the installation process. People want o know how much of a hassle it will be; full scale renovation, or just minor inconvenience? Below we detail the installation process so you can know exactly what you’re getting into.

Are Window Films Good DIY Projects?

Although simple on the surface, window film installation is not a great DIY project. There are lots of ways to botch the installation, especially when it’s your first time. The cost of making mistakes and ending up with a bad result, or a costly re-do, is way too high to consider doing a DIY. For such a significant upgrade, it makes sense to go with the pros.

Besides the difficulty of installation, pros get access to commercial-grade films that are not sold at hardware stores. The best film companies don’t want to develop a bad reputation by having their films sloppily applied, and high-quality films are often harder to work with.

How Are Window Films Installed?

Before unrolling the film or touching a window, installers will first move any furniture out of the way, and cover carpeting and flooring so that it doesn’t get disturbed. After the space is clear, installers will meticulously clean each window to make sure the surface is ready for good adhesion. Installers will finish up the prep by using a squeegee to ensure that the window is totally dry.

The next step is to measure each pane of glass and cut the films to the exact specification (sometimes, this is done ahead of time). Pros will cut the films a tiny bit large to account for glass expanding and contracting.

Once the glass is clean and the films are cut to size, the actual installation can begin. Installers will spray the glass with soapy water to make the fitting process easier. Installers will also spray the film itself to prevent any static electricity from interfering with a perfect installation. Once the film is in perfect position, the technicians break out the squeegee again to remove any air bubbles or water. The final step is trimming the film again with a razor blade to ensure the perfect fit.

All things considered, a typical residential job is done in an afternoon.
